Hi Bruce,

I don't know how much money you have to spare but you have a couple of
options if you are hesitant. For example you could get an experienced K2
builder to assemble your K2 - or at least to build the core module.

Another route suggested by others is to build your own K1 first. The K1 with
all accessories - the 4 band module, ATU and noise blanker - has a similar
amount of toroids and components as the K2, but the setup and alignment is
less demanding. It also has the advantage that the steps can phased - eg you
build the core K1 kit first and enjoy showing it off and then finish the
accessories one by one at a later date.

I endorse the temp controlled soldering iron. It is essential. As far as
solder is concerned I would recommend multicore flux solder which produces
better solder flow and less flux on the board. I've only recently found out
that multicore does not seem to be as widely used in the US as Europe, but I
understand it is a open secret that many US technicians use multicore. I
think the Kester grade 44 is well known. There has been some discussion of
multicore on the QRP-L mailing list.

Depending on how many mistakes you make during construction (!), you will
also find a good desoldering tool extremely handy. There are plenty of
people on the list who will offer you input on this subject!

Lastly, let me say that the manuals are good and clear and any queries can
be resolved here on this list. The Elecraft designers and other experts
monitor this list, and so you have access directly to a wide band of
experience.

Good luck, and if you decide to take the plunge, let us all know your
progress!

Regards,
Tony
