[Elecraft] folded dipole of topic

It is not NECESSARY to drop down to single wires at the ends. Although
it is a lot more convenient for pruning, it does narrow the bandwidth
vs. using the parallel line exclusively, and lowers the feed
impedance. Single wire ends may work for you or against you depending
on your situation.

While the spacing isn't critical, the physical length of the folded
section
is NOT = 468/F in MHz for lowest SWR in most installations.
Assuming you are planning on a two-wire folded dipole, the length of
the
folded section out to the shorted ends is k X 458/f where "K" is the
velocity factor of the two-wire line. Wires are added to the ends to
make up
the rest of the length as needed to reach the full length (468/f).
For example, an 80 meter dipole would be 130' 0" overall. The "folded"
section would be 113' 1" if made from 450-ohm "windowline" and 104' 1"
if
made from 300-ohm twinlead.
On 40 the overall length would be 66' 10" with the folded section 58'
2" if
made from 450-ohm window line and 53' 5" if made from 300 ohm
twinlead.
