Dennis,
The only thing I can think of immediately is something associated with the
T-R switch. There are no relays switched when going from transmit to
receive.
I would recommend that you first check the soldering, then re-check it and
re-check it again. Often, a missed solder joint or a cold solder joint will
show the kind of intermittent behavior that you describe - it makes contact
good enough much of the time, but causes intermittent 'strange things to
happen', and may not show up for a long time after the gear has been put
into service - I have seen this problem with older equipment from the days
when commercial equipment was hand soldered.
