I beg to differ with Robert (BTW, that doesn't happen very often), the
number of turns will not change if using a different gauge wire. Look at
the formulas published by Amidon and you will not see any reference to the
wire size, only the core selection and the number of turns.
The main reason that the SSB toroids use 28 gauge is because of the small
size of the cores. It is difficult enough to get the turns on the core with
28 gauge, and 26 gauge would fill the core even more (i.e., one may not be
able to wind enough turns).
