A word of caution:

One problem with no AGC is what happens if you are scanning a band and 
stumble across a strong signal while wearing headphones.  Pretty painful 
to the ears.  My "Small Wonder 40" doesn't have AGC and I've experienced 
that quite a few times.  If you try this method, start with the gain 
pretty low and bring it up slowly when you hear a station, to protect 
your ears.
