G'day,
> Up high, they are killer DX antennas.
Too right. I threw one out on a 600' thick ice-shelf when I was in the
Antarctic and went portable with my FT-101 in a Muskeg. The FT-101 was a
bit cold at first, could hardly tune the VFO, and the inverter transistors
didn't want to start up until a little current through them warmed 'em up.
Later when I was running the commercial HF transmitting station in Stanley I
used the '101 on a spare Rhombic pointing at the UK. 600' long, 90' high.
Serious band opener to Europe. In fact, the spare antenna seemed better
than the main array of three nested 1100' long Rhombics between 75' and 145'
high.
Happy days.
