Today I took s/n 228 including the 30 meter module and the ATU for its first
trip to the field using a 52 ft wire sloping up to about 40 feet in a tree
with a 1/4 wave radial for each of the three bands.
VSWRs displayed were 1.2:1 on 40; and 1.5:1 on 20 and 30 meters.
I made one contact each on 20 (VE1AL) and 40 (K4VXT) and two on 30 (VE2YY
and W8EUI) between 3:30 and 4:40 local time.
During these contacts I found the performance of the little rig to be
flawless in both transmit and receive. I did note that it has been way too
long since I did any serious cw work and that operations in the field in the
winter (even in central SC) makes for cold, stiff fingers and an even worse
fist.
I had hoped to experiment with other length antennas but the sun goes down
early this time of year so that will have to wait till the next trip.
Thanks to Wayne, Eric and the entire Elecraft team for bringing us an
excellent rig with fantastic capabilities for portable operation including
hiking and camping trips.
