In general, it is most helpful (and saves bandwidth) if you reply to the
reflector. I hit "reply all" and edit out any other addresses UNLESS I'm
answering someone posting for "immediate help" or who says they are =
getting
a digest and want a direct answer.=20
I do that because it seems redundant to answer the person twice. If =
you're
reading the reflector, you'll see your thread pop up with the answers =
there
and others may have more info to add to my answer.=20
It seems to me that few people have absolutely unique problems. For =
every
question asked on the reflector, there are usually several others who =
want
to see the answer for "general knowledge" or who have had the same =
"problem"
but who haven't asked about it yet. If the answer is made direct, then =
each
of them must ask the question again or be left in the dark.
Eric is the list moderator. He occasionally posts reminders of the =
"rules".
In summary, they are these:
1- Eric makes the rules.
2- If in doubt about a rule, see Rule 1 above.=20
For guidelines, those are Eric's province too but in general they go:
- Keep the amount of stuff you repeat back from the question to the =
minimum
needed to make sense of your answer.
- No personal attacks or ridicule. There are NOT "dumb questions".=20
- Check other replies first to see if someone has already posted what =
you
are about to. If you have something to add, it's usually most helpful to =
add
it to the reply rather than re-post all of your answer over again - and
easier for the person who has question to follow your thinking. That =
won't
eliminate duplicate replies entirely since there is a variable delay =
between
posting time and when your message appears.=20
Again, if you have any questions, see Rule 1, above.=20
Welcome to the reflector Tom. It a great bunch of
builders/operators/tinkerers here.

...Since this is my first use of the reflector, I could also use some
instruction on protocol. Does one normally use the "reply" function to =
reply
to responses or does that only go back to the sender and not the
reflector?... Tom W0MFQ
