Thanks for the response Gregg. Yes, I do have the jumper in J7 and also
verified the receiver mode is Norm. Since this is my first use of the
reflector, I could also use some instruction on protocol. Does one normally
use the "reply" function to reply to responses or does that only go back to
the sender and not the reflector? I guess if I use "reply" I need to add the
reflector address if I want both or delete the direct respondent address if
only the reflector is desired.

Do you have the jumper in the jack where the ATU plugs in so you have an
actual antenna connection. Also regarding the CW tone...are you in normal
mode and not ssb??

Subject: [Elecraft] KX1 Rcvr Help

Hi Guys,
I've just completed my KX1 assembly through the receiver section and have a
problem getting through the alignment. Hopefully someone will have some
ideas with my description of the problem.
1. I have very weak noise level and I know my earphones aren't optimum but I
don't think they're the primary problem. I plan to get some better quality
ear buds but I think I have something more serious right now.
2. When I connect an external antenna, the noise level doesn't change
noticeably and I certainly don't hear any frequency specific signals. I say
specific because as my fingers get close to the tuning knob and U5/U6
specifically, I pick up some local broadcast station.
3. When I set up my TS-450 to a 20 meter freq into a dummy load at minimum
power and go key down, I can hear the carrier in the KX1 at the correct
frequency but I don't hear the CW tone, just a broad carrier. I can attempt
to peak the 20A & 20B trimmers and can indeed find a peak. I also then begin
hearing 20 meters CW activity in the backgroud but as soon as I unkey the
TS-450, the KX1 goes back quiet with very low noise level and no 20 meter
background CW where there was some previously.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this problem description? I assume I need
to resolve this before continuing on with the xmtr.
Thanks in advance.
