Don, Phil, Ruchan-
No, toroids really do not have to look pretty- so long as the windings are
not bunched up on the core. Properly distributing the windings on the core
as per manual specifications is all that is usually needed to ensure that
the resultant L-value is within the desired range. There are some exceptions
to this, such as the VFO coil in the K1 that might require adjusting. There
is also the occasional core that is out of spec enough to make a difference,
but in my experience this is *very* anomalous.
I think that the majority of problems builders have with toroids is in
getting the leads properly prepared. This is an area where builders should
concentrate their energies. This might be where 'pretty' does count
somewhat- if 'pretty' is defined by properly tinned and without a trace of
enamel in the area where the inductor's leads will be in close proximity to
the holes in the PCB.
Since the proof is generally in the pudding, it sounds as though Ruchan has
done a good job in this respect!
