Don't feel bad.  It has me baffled, too.  But then I don't trust S 
meters much anyway so I don't much care :-)

To activate S meter mode, cycle thru the Display options

Alas .. thought I had it doped out, but my results match yours.

But then I really do not need an S meter in my KX1 :-)
