[Elecraft] KX1 S-Meter calibration confusion

I am obviously an idiot, because I can't make any sense of the S-meter
calibration instructions provided in the Menu Functions table on page 65 of
the KX1 manual.

The s-meter has been dead since I first applied power to the transceiver.
All other LED display functions appear to be fine.

The instructions say to adjust the Zero Parameter setting for zero-bars
indication in S-meter mode with no signal. What's "S-meter mode"? It
doesn't appear to be a setting I have to engage, so I assume that's what the
receiver defaults to after the frequency display times out.

If so, then my first problem is that I get a zero-bars indication regardless
of where the Zero Parameter is set. And the adjustment range on mine goes
from 40 to 99, not 30 to 99.

I guess once I get the Zero Parameter set correctly then I can adjust the
Scale Parameter. I assume that the letter "H" I see on my display refers to
the Scale Parameter? I did notice that H can be adjusted from 2 to 7 with
the BAND and RIT buttons (not 2 to 6 like the manual says).

If someone has calibrated their S-meter successfully I'd appreciate it if
they could provide some step by step instructions on how to do so.

Thanks and 73,

Ken - VE3HLS
