In a contest you call CQ and listen for an answer. No one is going to =
respond while the CQ is going on, so having full breakin is to no =
advantage, really. A response to a CQ usually happens within a second =
or two, and if no response, then the CQ is thrown out there again. The =
CQer is trying to keep the signal out there so band scanners won't miss =
it. However, NA contest software has an "auto-pilot" CQ function which =
is useful for holding a frequency during a bathroom break. =20

  I ran across a few guys who were pumping out their calls every 2 or 3=20
  seconds without pause...like some sort of beacon. They didn't appear =
to be=20
  trying to break a pileup, so I assume they were using full breakin and =

  listening for calls through the outgoing dits and dahs...or was he =
just=20
  reserving his place on the band while he went for a bathroom break? =
