The proper sponge technique is to wring out the excess water; then the iron
recovers in the time it takes to move from solder station sponge to the
workpiece.

You quickly wipe the tip on both sides and it will heat up very quickly
again as you feed it some fresh solder before moving on to the joint.  You
just want to coat the tip, not have a glob of solder.  Less is better here.
And never file a plated tip which most on soldering stations are these days.
