  I'm not sure I'd go for a Brillo pad for this use.  Brillo pads are a 
reasonably fine steel wool pad (maybe 0 or 00 grit) that is permeated with 
a scouring soap.  I don't recall from my many trips through the UK (or at 
least Cornwall) seeing such in the Safeway or Sainsbury or Tesco or the 
like.  But I would fear a Brillo pad could leave a film on the iron.  It's 
scouring soap requires a good deal of rinsing when used to scour pots.  A 
regular steel wool pad would accomplish the same end without the soap. 
But, of course, in line with my last post, a simple paper towel can't be 
beat.
