My thought on this has been to retune one SSB filter such that
it's centered instead of offset - tune for lowest "swish", if
you know what I am saying. Then you'll actually hear both
sides* (USB and LSB) of the station. Then, you'd probably have
better luck adjusting the trimmer for zero beat. If you can't
hear the ~0 Hz swish then you could always turn the trimmer=20
back and forth and "split the difference" so to speak.

Then once you're done, reset the SSB BFO freq to the proper
offset.

with a variable BFO control. AF gain up, RF gain back,=20
BFO to one side, and off you go with push-pull 6V6 audio
tubes. Ahhhh! :-)
