Vic sounds like a guy I met at coastal radio station KPH one day. I was
visiting my buddy, Les, who was an operator there and he wanted to =
introduce
me to a friend of his. We walked over to his operating position where =
the
guy was copying traffic on a mill. Even though he was copying traffic =
the
guy jumped up and said, "Hi!" and we chatted for a minute while CW =
rattled
forth behind him. Suddenly he turned and sent a single "R" on the bug =
and
the next message began. After probably close to a minute he said, =
"Excuse
me", sat down at the mill, finished the half-completed message he had,
obviously working from memory, stuffed the next message form into the =
mill
and wailed away for a bit catching up to where the other station was
currently.=20
I knew that I stood in the presence of an operator I could only dream of
emulating <G>=20
Some pix of that station in those days is at:=20

The above link takes you to a photo of my buddy Les at work. I now have =
that
bug on my desk: a gift from his widow. The other pages show lots of =
views of
the KPH operations.=20

-----Original Message-----
... I personally (after 48 years of CW) copy in my head and take notes =
of=20
what the operator said so I can comment on it. I do recall that my most =
rapid advancement in skill occurred while I was copying traffic and=20
trying very hard to write everything down correctly. I think what=20
helped me was learning to copy phrases or sentences in my head and then=20
writing down what I had copied, a few words behind what I was receiving. =
Try to do this.
