[Elecraft] High SWR problem

I know - had a brainstorm, meant to write Garden.

Anyway, mystery solved. Without making any changes have managed to tune 3.5,
21, 24, 28 and 50MHz which can't be bad for a piece of copper wire and a
crappy earth !

And the SWR on 3.5 is the worst at about 1:2 (is that the right way around?)
and best on 24 and 28MHz where there's almost no reflected power. 50MHz is
about the same as 3.5MHz. The rest are completely seem to be un-tunable.

So overall am pleased and thanks for everyone's input.

One last question - would a dipole be as flexible and give better results ?
Is there an alternative to a beam on HF that would better a long wire or
dipole ?

Thanks again !

Edward
