I know everyone has said to lose the balun, and they are right. But, I am
still curious how the thing was hooked up in the first place. A balun has
two input wires (unbalanced, ground and RF) and two output wires (balanced,
RF+ and RF-). You have told us you connected coax to the input wires
(correct), and the long wire to the RF+ output wire, but you've never said
what happened to the "other" output wire. Very curious.
You may not know (you said it was "ready made" with balun) but It's just
bothering me trying to visualize what you've got there! Of course, it's
really all moot, as the balun has to go!
Good luck. You have more than enough suggestions here to keep busy without
doing research to make me more comfortable. But it's just nagging in the
back of my hed.

<snip>Not sure what type of balun it is - I bought the longwire ready-made
with balun attached.</snip>
