Bob,
I highly recommend that you make direct connection to the battery - both the
positive and the negative sides, and fuse both sides of the feed near the
battery. it should be easy to get a wire through the firewall in an
existing grommet - if you do have to drill a hole through metal, use some
kind of sleeve so vibration will not eat through the insulation on the wire.
Cigsrette lighter plugs and jacks are nortorious for making bad
connections - if there is another alternative, use it. OTOH, if you must
use the cigarette lighter wireing in the vehicle, there is nothing that says
you can't wire to the back side of the cigarette lighter - usually it is fed
with a heavy guage wire.
