[Elecraft] New Builder

Hi

All of the below is good but I would thank a piece of equipment that =
would be useful to help with the adjustment or operation of the radio =
would be a better choice. The OHR dummy load ($35) and/or WM-2 watt =
meter ($90) are good first time kits. The quality is good the manuals =
are fair and you can not get much simpler than the dummy load. It is =
just soldering 20 5 watt resistors to a circuit board and installing it =
in a box. The dummy load can be modified to make it a 50 ohm power =
attenuator so the WM-2 can connect to it and read up to 100 or more =
watts on the WM-2. See http://www.ohr.com/

If you want a Noise generator I still have a few left $15 check or money =
order.=20

Note Elecraft will have it's own version of a noise generator so once my =
supply of boards is gone I will not have any more noise generator kits. =
I will still have the solar charge controller kits however. ($30)

=3D=3D>That said, I think that while the K1 would be an excellent =
first kit for
  an
=3D=3D>aspiring builder, perhaps it is not the best place to learn =
how to melt
=3D=3D>solder. For a warm up, you can go to any Radio Shack and get =
some perf
  board
=3D=3D>and a few resistors, caps, etc. and get a little practice =
working with
  the
  =3D=3D>solder iron.

  Ryan,

This is very good advice. You might want to even try a cheap kit if =
they
have one or maybe take a look at a kit from Ramsey
(http://www.ramseyelectronics.com/). They also have a little blurb on
  soldering and kit building at
  http://www.ramseyelectronics.com/sitepages/pdf/kitbuilding2kE.pdf. =
There
are other kit makers as well, but this was the only one off the top of =
my
head. Spending $15 to $30 on kit that you can use afterwards to gain =
the
experience to tackle the K1 is a good investment.

  Cheers,
