At 30 wpm, the dit period is roughly 50 msec. I checked the data sheets for the 1N914 and the reverse recovery time is between 4 and 8 nsec so that would be in the noise I think. My guess is it's not the diode switching time. 

If the sampling rate is too slow (> 50 ms), its possible the circuit misses a consecutive dot and dash and automatically switches to keyer mode. And perhaps as soon as a consecutive dot and dash is detected it goes back to manual mode and so on. Just presumption on my part though hihi.
