Hello Elecrafters,
I have a K1 with the 4 band module. Initially I set it up as 40/30/20/17.
Everything worked except 20m. 40m, 30m and 17m were calibrated and a few QSO's
were made on 40m (by the ham that helped me calibrate). I was 'talked into'
changing from 17m to 15m. I removed the crystal for 17m and I installed the
crystal for 15m.
With that one change I found I was unable to calibrate 15m. The display was
way off. I emailed this list and followed as much advice as I could.
I re-wound each of the torroidal inductors with new wire. I checked out the
transformers and they all looked ok and ohmed out ok so I left them alone. This
is my first kit and those were my first torroids and did not look as good as the
rest of the kit so I wanted to rewind them anyhow.
I still could not calibrate 15m and 20m was still dead. About a week later
15m died so I took the advice of getting away from the kit for a while so that
when I come back 'everything is suspect.' Today I took out the 4 band board and
its instruction book and went from the beginning to the end. I checked every
single value on every component. Instead of soldering I checked continuity.
Absolutely everything checked out.
I found 3 leads that did not look perfect; I reflowed 2 and sucked and
resoldered 1. I then reflowed each torroid and the transformers. 15m and 20m
are still dead. 40m and 30m still work fine. I took the board out again and
reflowed the solder on each relay.
The only piece of test equipment that I own is a dmm. I tested the value of
the 1 resistor and I rechecked each of test points in the book. Everything
checked out ok. I switched between each band and then checked the relays. Each
relay seemed to be switching correctly. I can not find any fault with the 4
band filter board.
This radio does work. Several QSO's have been made on 40 meters. The ATU
was able to find a match for 40m 30m and 17m before I swapped the crystals for 15m.
Feedback on some suggestions:
I do not know how to test if a crystal is working. On 40m, 30m, 17m (when it
was in the radio) and 15m (when it was working) if I placed my dmm on P1 pin6 I
could hear a difference in the radio. My dmm can not read a value that small
but it did alter the circuit. I can not hear any change on 20m or 15m at this
point.
I do not know how to tell if I am tuning the board to the wrong mixer frequency.
The crystals are not shorted.
I am peaking in the order listed in the book.
I do not have another receiver to aid with the peaking.
I count one crystal for 15m and one crystal for 17m making a total of two
crystals being dealt with in the swap.
That about covers it. Could there be something on the RF board that could work
for one band and not for another? Because I could not calibrate 15m I may have
been using the wrong mixer frequency. Is that something that would be dealt
with on the RF board?
Thanks for reading my long post on a small radio,
Jack Zielke
