[Elecraft] Starting out early in Ham Radio?

Hi all: My daughter, Zane, became a ham at age 9. It started with a
bribe from me, but she eventually got hooked on her own. She was able
to progress to Extra (20wpm!) just past her 10th birthday. It was a
great experience for the two of us, and we are currently building a K2
together. Zane is doing everything but wind the toroids, which I take
care of. This is another great opportunity to do things together. Now
14, Zane's interests have expanded to a lot of other areas, but I am
convinced she will have a life-long interest in ham radio. Zane has
earned DXCC and WAS, and she currently holds the callsign W2YL.
I refer you to an article she and I wrote for the July 1999 "QST":
"Help Your Child Earn a Ticket".
I encourage any who have a kid showing a little interest to put the
effort into this. It was an amazingly rewarding experience for both my
daughter and me.

On the lighter side:
Just in from Mattel: new Barbie "Ham Salon" is about to released in time
for Hamvention 2003. The small case, folds open to reveal a full ham
station, including radio, working morse key, and crank-up tower. Even a
mag-mount for the corvette.
Watch lights in kitchen flicker and TV buzz as Barbie goes QRO.
MFJ is rushing to bring a competing product to market. Icom is working
on
a version that doesn't make the TV buzz when Barbie turns on the amp.
heh!
Seriously, my seven-year-old daughter has expressed a little curiosity.
I'm taking it lightly. She knows a few morse characters and likes to
play
with the Bencher and K2 in "TEST" mode. My philosophy has been to
respond
to her "reaches" as long as her attention span can deal with it.

Hi Folks,
After listening to my 16 month year-old daughter stab out the letter C
in
morse on the toy piano, I wondered at what age I should encourage her to
explore Ham Radio and morse?
I also have a 6-year old daughter who shows absolutely no interest but
patient tolerance to my mad activities - is there anything I can do
with
her at that age?
Regards,
Tony
