In a previous life I was an ORGAN Techican..yes you know the big
monstrosities in churches. Well they started making them electronic and I
ended up working for Rogers Organ out of Oregon. They used all TTL and CMOS
and Memory Cores (do you guys know about Core memory...early IBM's and Space
comms)...well early prototypes didn't work with sockets and so they designed
them soldered into the boards. However when I had to repair a lightening
hit with CD4094's on the board...all you did was spend a day with a solder
sucker and a scope and followed the data stream through all the chips and
when the stream didn't exit you sucked the chip out and put another in.
Needless to say some of the big organs had over 200 CD4094's in them...I
spent 3 days in Haughton Michigan (UP) just going through and replacing
4094's.........wow.....would've been a 2 hour job with sockets...but the
timing delay due to the sockets made it unreliable. Other than uP's and
Memory chips....don't use sockets...it's better to have a desoldering
station handy......
God I'm glad I don't do that for a living anymore.
