One thing I'm concerned about with increasing the gain of the IF amp, NOISE.
The IF amp we use is a noisy beast in its own right.  Try bypassing the
second crystal filter some time and see how much your noise increases.
What will be the effect of increasing the amplifier gain?  Will the
internally generated noise increase also, or will the signal to noise ratio
actually improve?
Anybody know?
