Have popped two MPUs and an Op-Amp.....I consider myself a bit of an expert on 
this.......

The short and sweet answer is: if you only have connections to pins 1, 2, 3, and 5 
on the K2 serial connector, then you won't hurt the radio. Make a cable with that 
configuration and do the rest of the "creative stuff" downwind of that. Don't (DO 
NOT) plug-in any null-modem adapters or other stuff like that into the K2's serial 
connector. It will cost you......
