HI
I just checked both of my K2's #1808 QRP and #2174 QRO and STL of 40 is c=
loser to what I would call a comfortable level. Setting it to 12 was quit=
e low on both the internal speaker and Sony MDR-V900 studio monitor phone=
s. However setting the STL to 255 is quite loud, uncomfortable, although =
not ear splitting on the internal speaker (ear splitting in the phones). =
As I remember the other K2's I have built other people I set the STL arou=
nd 40 also. My K2's have the side tone sine wave mod on the control board=
but it did not change the side tone level much from stock and I am using=
 a 600 Hz tone

If anyone would like me to measure the levels at some points in my radios=
for comparison let me know the test points and I will post the values. P=
lease let me know if you want scope (PK to PK) or meter (RMS) measurement=
s.

Yeah! I run ST-L at 12 on the phones too and it's plenty loud. =20

That's a strong sign that the problem for at least some K2's is in the
audio amplifier circuit and not earlier in the receiver. Trying to make
up for low audio by boosting gain up in the preamplifier or other RF
stages in the receiver is sure to degrade the overall performance. The
dynamic range, at least, will be compromised. =20

40 ! Wow =20

With #0069 I use STL of 12 when I use headphone, 40
would make my ears bleed.
