The 'N' means plastic package. Surface mount is 'M' and ceramic package i=
s 'J'. These designators are used by National Semiconductor other manufac=
turers use different letters to indicate the package

There are different versions of the LM380N.  8 means 8 pin DIP (there is =20
also one with 14 pins).

I don't recall re the N.
