Pete,
It most likely peaks the caps much more precisely than you ever could
using audible receiver noise alone, since during the transmit alignment
you actually have a meter (LCD) to show when a peak is obtained.
Think of the receiver noise-peaking step as simply a way to get the caps
in the ballpark, and the tranmitter power output alignment step as the
final adjustment of those same caps for optimal performance. That is
why, for the K1, the use of fancy methods to align the filter board on
receive is pretty much a waste of time, since you'll be changing ALL
those painstakingly made cap adjustments during the following
transmitter alignment.
Even IF you could detect a small degradation in receiver sensitivity
after performing the transmitter alignment, the receiver has much more
than enough gain anyway. It's the transmitter alignment that is far far
more critical.
BTW, the KFL1-4 instructions warn that there may be a discernable
difference on 15 meters between the alignment for max receive noise and
the alignment for max transmitter output, but I've never been able to
detect any difference during any of the several times I've aligned my
KFL1-4 (I had to re-build it with the new blue trimmer caps).
