About the easiest method I've found for (more or less) securely mounting 
toriods vertically has been to mount them as usual, pulling LIGHTLY on the 
leads and bending them on the foil side of the board, so they'll (kinda) 
hold the core in place.

Once soldered in place, BUT before clipping the leads, I grab each lead and 
pull it lightly WHILE re-heating the pad. This allows me to take up any 
slack which I couldn't take up when neither of the leads was soldered.

This results in the core being pulled up snug against the board.

THEN I flush-cut the leads.
