Yes! A different gauge of wire will result in more or less turns to obtain
the same inductance as with the proper size wire. If you must compromise,
it's a good idea to have an inductance meter to verify correct inductance.
The other option is to wind it as per instructions, then install. If it is
not correct, add a winding first to see if things improve. If not then
remove a winding. Make sure you add a winding first cause you can't get
that winding back if you were to remove it first.
