I can't comment on batteries, since I've not tested it that way (and I
use a custome battery pack with 10 AAs).
With 13.8 VAC I get between 6.5 and 7 Watts on 40/30/20/15..
It sounds like you should do better, Alan. But make sure the meter you
have is giving you a fairly accurate power reading. My best meter is 5%
of full scale and has a 5 Watt scale -- meaning it could have a 2.5 W
error on that scale. If you have a 20 W scale and 10% FS accuracy
(pretty typical), you could have an error as high as two watts.
But, if you can get 5 Watts on 40, I would expect you to get as much on
20 and almost as much on 17 or 15. I suspect something is not quite right.
