[Elecraft] L34 adjustment (again)

Hi all,
I just had to try the method of adjusting L34 using Spectrogram
that was mentioned recently, so I downloaded Gram7.zip to be able to use
the latest version of Spectrogram, and started fiddling with L34.
I may be doing something wrong, but I was getting no alteration in the
level of the signal from the 40m "birdie", but there was quite a noticeable
difference in the noise floor as shown on screen.
I had the volume turned down so the noise floor was just "bubbling" over
the base line, and it was quite easy to see changes there.
Anyway, I have ended up leaving the core of L34 screwed down about
3 turns, which is quite a difference from the 1 1/2 turns I had
originally. It also doesn't compute with the 1 - 2 turns mentioned in the
manual.
I tried listening to the signal while I adjusted the core and there is a
definite drop in perceived background noise at 3 turns down with no
apparent drop in signal level, so I am inclined to think it might be
somewhere near the ultimate setting, but there is just that nagging doubt
that "something may not be right here". What do the list members think ??
While the Jury is out I might check the circuit around that area to make
sure it is as it should be.
Incidently the "Peak reading" feature on 'Gram 7 is a handy feature....
Cheers.......Ron ZL1TW
