[Elecraft] MP-1 and antenna analyzer

This has been my experience using MFJ antenna analyzer: They are fine
for checking resonance of an antenna, usually fairly accurate as far a
resonant frequency. But as for SWR there are many variables that can
influence the readings. Alf Sommers educated me on this when I was
tuning up my 805 LogYagi. There was significant difference in SWR
readings when using the SWR meter in rig verses the MFJ. The resonant
frequencies were the same on each band but the SWR was at times
measured very different. Also the length of coax from rig to antenna
makes a huge difference with a multiband antenna. There are lenghts to
avoid which are documented in ARRL antenna handbook, there will be
some trade-offs on multiband antennas. Since you are mainly interested
in the SWR that the rig sees anyway that is where the readings should
be taken. Second best if rig does not have SWR function is a SWR meter
close to rig.

As for the MP-1 and its derivatives I use the long extension from the
tripod base to coil, tune for maximum noise on each band and then
touch up with low power and meter in rig. Works FB most of the time,
others you may need to play with radials, slightly elevated radials
seem to work best for me. Have worked lots of DX from picnic tables,
but if you find an aluminum bleacher around you will be quite
surprised, have done this between futball matches with FB results.
