Not necessarily true, Jerry.  Maybe if they're quoting db measurements...
and even then, some hams do have the required test equipment to make those
measurements.  But... it is simple and easy to connect two receivers to an
antenna switch and switch a single antenna between them.  Find a signal
that's almost hidden in the noise and you'll frequently find one receiver
allows you to copy it when the other one doesn't.  You can also find a
signal that is weak and obscured by nearby QRM while the other receiver may
be able to receive it with little, no, or less QRM so that it is copyable.
Those tests are very easy to run and don't require any test equipment beyond
your own ears.  It's rare that you will NOT find differences between two
receivers that even a rag-chewer will appreciate.
