George and all,
Yes, the best way to assure quality is to design it in as you have stated -
I worked for many years with development based Quality Assurance at IBM, and
assuring adequate design margins was the only way to do it right.
Even with that effort, there will be some occasions where a bad part is
encountered - that is not the fault of Elecraft directly, but of their
component suppliers. That being said, I feel that we owe it to Elecraft's
quality control to report all such occurances as we find them. Even if we
have a richly endowed junkbox and can replace the part, I think we should
mention the fact to the folks at Elecraft - only they can identify multiple
occurances of such problems and then take the steps to correct them with
their suppliers.
