The original "mod" to increase the mic gain consisted of swapping R14 and R2
on the SSB board. This changed R14 from 1.0 k to 5.6 k, thereby increasing
the input impedance and providing more mic gain at the input to the Speech
Compressor. It also REDUCED the value of R2 from 5.6 k to 1.0k, providing
more audio to the Balanced Modulator.
Both of these changes served to increase the amount of audio gain in the
system.
There were a few comments that reducing R2 from 5.6 k to 1.0 k could
over-drive the Balanced Modulator, however I have never seen any follow up
that suggests that this is really the case. I have heard several K2's on the
air with good audio that di the swap. No apparent problems were noted.
I do notrecall any suggestions to increase the value of R2. That would
reduce the audio gain, and leave you back where you started.
Paralleling the two caps to reach 120 pf (or 122 pf) will work just find.
That's what I did too.
