Well, youse guys made me do it.
I put a 1900mcd yellow LED (Radio Shack) in each corner of the display.
Behind the front panel, tho, I taped a piece of white paper with a hole for
the display so a bunch of the light could get reflected off the front. I
also made some baffles to keep the light from being quite so obvious around
the buttons.
Actually, works pretty well. Not like an actual backlight, but plenty of
illumination to see the display, and with the paper in there, it appears to
come from all around the display.
