Part of the "preparation" is to be sure the AGC is in FAST as well. It's a
bit irritating because the I-F Gain (AKA "RF Gain") control does not bypass
that delay, so if AGC is left in SLOW, the "RF Gain" function is VERY
sluggish.
All of this discussion has me eyeing the second antenna RX input with an
idea of building an EXTERNAL continuously variable attenuator to function as
a real RF-Gain control. By calibrating it, I'd have a way of accurately
evaluating signals when doing on-air tests with people, using a simple audio
voltmeter to monitor the output.
I'm reluctant to start because customizing a K2 is, I think, like touching
up paint. A while back I set out to touch up the white paint on the porch
and several weeks later I found that I had gone all the way around our
property doing the fence until I came back to where I started. Only with a
Ham rig, one NEVER gets back to where one started <G>.
