[Elecraft] K2 QSL card question

Tim, it depends on the camera and what you do to the file before sending it.
I had a digital photo made into a card and it worked just fine. I used a 2
megapixel camera, then resized the photo to the proper size at 300dpi
resolution. The key to a good print for any digital picture is to convert
it to at least 240dpi before printing. The printer I used wanted 300. I
currently have a 5MP camera and wish I'd had it then... there would probably
have been a tiny bit more crispness in the detail, but what I got rivals
most of the picture postcards you buy in stores.
If you're going to be taking a relative "close-up" photo, use a tripod... if
you can, manually set the lens to the smallest opening and use a
well-lighted location or flash. That will give you the greatest depth of
field and better focus on both the key and the K2. Take quite a few
exposures... bracket your shots if necessary, and choose the best one to
send in. Convert it to 300dpi and the size your printer wants BEFORE you
sharpen, add your callsign or otherwise manipulate it. (Always save the
original photo and work with a copy so you can backtrack and start fresh if
necessary.)
My cards were done by Royal Printing Co. 423-282-0451. I think they have a
web site. They will send you a proof before final printing, though I found
the proof was not exactly like the finished product. It's been a couple of
years ago but I think I paid just over $100 for 1000. There is a place in
Russia (yes... Russia) that has the best price on photo cards. I was
reluctant to deal with someone quite that far away, though I have since
heard many people praise them and say the service is quick. Check QSL Cards
on the net.
Hope that helps... Ed, W5EJ
