I'm not sure that all the wire Elecraft ships is the same, but I found that
the 'enameled' wire in my K2 kit stripped VERY easily. I can see how
friction with a paper clip would have pulled the enamel off of it.

Indeed, rather than messing with the solder blob, I 'stripped' the ends by
simply drawing the wire over a moderately sharp edge. The enamel came off in
long strips - and sometimes in a single tube - just like plastic insulation
would when stripped.
