[Elecraft] Incresing a wattmeter's sensitivity?

Hi Folks,
I have an old mfj 949B tuner that I would like to dedicate to my qrp gear. 
Problem is, the meter is very qro oriented, can't get it to peak when trying 
to "set" for swr test.
I tweaked the trimmer cap on the meter board, and while this did help, I 
still need more "juice" to the meter. Presently the rf input has one wire 
passing through the "sensing" toroid. Would a couple turns through this 
toroid pick up more energy?
Not really worried about numbers on meter being calibrated, just wanting 
relative measurements for swr.
