Try a piece of clear fishing line, you will need a clean cut both ends (so 
that the light is coupled in ) If you have no luck finding some fibre, I 
can send you a proper piece of Data fibre (plastic type used for Digital 
audio and short network runs) but I am in Ireland so I am sure you can find 
something that will work closer to home.
