Randy-
Just FYI, I often see a similar condition, although I don't often switch
between the "tESt" and "OPEr" modes when it occurs. I've seen it occur when
changing bands and/or modes too, although not frequently.
I usually just start operating (answering or calling 'CQ'), and sometimes
notice that it takes a few dits of CW to "awaken" the K2. I've found that
simply holding "TUNE" button before operating will also wake up the rig and
get it to perform as asked.
Following the start of a QSO, it never reappears. In fact, now that I think
about it, I'm not sure it EVER appears more than once a day or so.
It's never caused me any difficulty; in fact, I find it sort of amusing to
have to "nudge" or "kickstart" the rig to life. Reminds me of my old
Labrador Retriever who hated to be moved from her favorite perch when
sleeping; she required frequent "restarting."
Just treat the condition as a "feature" of your K2 and go about your QSOs;
you'll eventually come to regard it as just an idiosyncrasy that causes no
difficulty (at least that's my view).

On two isolated occasions I have noticed that I have no indication of power
output on the bargraph (both time at 5 watts). Turning the power knob from
5
watts and then back to 5 watts remedies the problem. Both times this
happened immediately after switching from the 'practice' mode to the 'oper'
mode on cw. I run directly to a resonant dipole so I had no indication of
whether there was actually no rf or if it is just a problem in the sensing.
Anyone else experienced this problem? 72-Randy,wv9n
