Grab hold of jedit ( http://www.jedit.org ) and then you won't care so 
much what platform you're on....as far as editing is concerned.  I've 
found no shortage of ham software for Linux, and I have a project going 
to write a rig-control program in Java.

Of course vi, Emacs and firewalling are native to Linux. Antivirus 
hasn't been a big concern, although intrusion detection software 
abounds, and that tends to catch anything viral in the act.
