I built most of my KPA100 with the same 700 degree tip that I have used on other Elecraft kits. It worked OK but the KPA100 has a large number of ground pads. Although these pads are cut out to minimize heat transfer to the groundplane, they are still a lot slower to heat than signal pads. Switching to an 800 degree tip made soldering these pads much easier.
I used a heavy duty Weller soldering gun on all of the Q1/2 tabs and found it more than adequate. Quite fast, in fact.
