Since the "hamstick" is a 1/4 wave radiator, electrically, it's looking for
some sort of "counterpoise" or "ground" to make it resonant.
I suspect that the capacitance of the airframe to ground from 15,000 feet is
a tad less than that of the SUV frame to ground.
So, what's needed is a 1/2 wave radiator. That's what the old "trailing
wire" antennas used by many aircraft up into the 60's ran out.... a modern
version of the Zepp Antenna.
Hmmm... how about hanging a GAP Titan off of the tail hook <G>?
