[Elecraft] KAT1 Problem

Gang,
I finished assembling and aligning the K1 (S/N 1202) that I bought at
Dayton ... it works great!
Now I've moved on to the KAT1 (purchased at the same time as the K1) and
have run into a problem. Building the tuner wasn't a problem ... it only
took about 3 hours to complete. The problem came when I tried to do the
"Initial Tests" on page 9 of the manual. The K1 powered up normally ...
but in the second step when I tried to edit the "ATU" menu item, I got the
dreaded "ATU menu parameter shows '---' at all times" error. I went
through the troubleshooting on page 14. The rig has version 109 of the
main processor firmware (according to the label on the chip and
confirmed by holding down a button while powering up the K1). The
connectors on the KAT1 and the KFL1-4 filter board are all mounted
correctly and I've inspected both sides of the boards several times to be
sure that there are no unsoldered pins or solder bridges. I checked the
power and ground connections to the processor on the KAT1 and used an ohm
meter to check for shorts between adjacent pins of the processor. Yes, the
processor is fully seated in its socket, with no bent pins, and it is not
plugged in backwards. I checked to be sure that there is continuity
between each of the processor pins and appropriate other points on the board.
Any ideas? Has anyone else experienced this behavior?
Oh, one other question ... I don't see any mention in the KAT1 manual of
the three-pin header P3 which is located on the K1 RF board, near J5. Is
this jumper meant to take the place of lifting one end of R36 when
installing the KAT1 in the K1?
Thanks,
