I can tell you that my lifepartner Gwen NG3P uses USB dongles in her 
shack, including to talk to her ICOM 746. Someone asked me offlist about 
using dongle DTR lines to key CW; but that I have no experience with.

Serial ports on laptops are definately dying out. Nobody uses an 
external modem with a laptop anymore.

While you're wishing for exotic KIO2 ports, how about an infrared link?
